Every day you crawl thousands of websites and you find that some of these are not fit for you, or for your child, or for your organization.

So whether you are looking to protect yourself from these inappropriate websites while working, or to protect your child from these websites,  we’ll walk you through exactly how to block any website on your computer, phone, or network, you find inappropriate. So let’s get started

Block Any Website On Your Computer (Windows)

Blocking using hosts file on Windows

Every website you accessed has Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with it. The Hosts file is used by the operating system to map hostnames like Google, Twitter, etc to equivalent IP addresses that identify or locate a host in an IP network. This file stored the information locally. This file can be used to block the desired website.

  1. Navigate to the “hosts” file by going through C >> Windows >> System32 >> drivers >> etc, then double click on the file named “hosts” and select Notepad from the list of programs.
  2. If you are unable to open the file directly, then an easy way is to fire up your Notepad by searching in the taskbar or by any other way you find appropriate.
    • Then when Notepad is open in front of you, click on the File option at the top, then click on Open, and on the popup screen navigate to the C >> Windows >> System32 >> drivers >> etc. There you will see the file named “hosts” open it. (If you see no files make sure you have selected the All Files options down in the bottom as shown in the picture).

3. File, as shown below, will open in front of you.

4. At the end of the file, add a line that contains your localhost address (i.e. 27.0.0.1) then press Tab key and then the name of the website you want to block (For example 27.0.0.1 https://www.ABC.com), make sure to add a separate line for each website you want to block as shown in the picture down below:

5. Now save this file by pressing (Ctrl+S) and close the file.

6. Restart your computer to see the changes you will make and you’ll find that all those websites are now blocked.

Blocking using extensions on Windows

If you are using Chrome then you can block any website using the extension and then there is no need to follow the above method. Just search “website block extensions chrome” in google and you will get the list of extensions you can use. Here is the one I am using:

Use this extension Block Site – Website Blocker for Chrome™ and follow the steps:

  1. When you click on Add to Chrome button a pop-up window will show to confirm the installation of the extension, click on the Add extension button.
  2. Access the Chrome menu by clicking the Customize and control Google Chrome button at the top right corner of the Chrome program window.
  3. Select More tools > Extensions in the menu.
  4. On the Block Site Options page, enter the website you want to block in the box next to the Add page button.
  5. Then click on the Add page button to block the website.

I think this is the easy method among all.

Block Any Website On Your Android

For Android, there are many free apps available through which you can block websites on your Android device or you can also do it without using any app, that is by editing the hosts file

Block Website on Android Device by Editing “hosts” file

Honestly, this the best technique you can try. But there’s a problem with that – being able to edit the “hosts” file requires your phone or tablet to be rooted. And not everybody has their device rooted. On top of that, not many people know how to edit the hosts file the right way as it is a bit technical.

Here are the steps to use above technique

  1. Install and open “ES File Explorer” or any other File Explorer.
  2. Tap on “3 Horizontal Bar” menu icon –> Tap on “Device” under ‘Local’ menu –> and Tap on “etc” folder.
  3. Scroll down and search for “hosts” file –> Tap on it and open it as ‘Text’ –> Select ‘ES Note Editor’.
  4. Now tap on “Pencil” icon on this Editor and add a new line with this syntax:  127.0.0.1 name_of_the_website as shown above in the computer example.
  5. Restart your phone and you will find all the websites all are blocked.

Block Website on Android Device using App

This is a simpler way to block any website i.e by using a third-party app. If you don’t want to use any third-party app for this, you can try getting the job done by the above method.

  1. Download and install this app and open it.
  2. Tap the “Safe Surfing” option.
  3. You will see an option called “Blocked List” in the app. Click on it, and add the websites you want to block by tapping on add. Make sure to add one at a time. Now restart the mobile and you will find that these websites are blocked on your Android smartphone.

However, this method has a disadvantage. If you try to access the website (say Facebook) in the incognito mode, you can get access to it even though it is on the blocked list.

Thanks you 🙂
